Zulte Waregem vs Lierse

This is a knockout game for the round of 16 of the Belgian Cup. In case of a draw, extra time occurs and if necessary, penalties shoot-out. Lierse showed some signs of life in the home game against Lokeren (1-1) in a game where with a little bit more luck they could win as they had two shots to the bar. Their coach Slavisa Stojanovic stated that he is very pleased with their performance and that they created many chances to score. To the previous round of the Belgian Cup they won at home easily 4:0 against St. Truiden.

But tonight Lierse have to face a huge number of problems. Coach Stojanovic left out of the squad many players to be rested, while there is many other players with injury problems. Main keeper Boban Bajkovic (8 games), defender Arjan Swinkels (8 games), striker Dorge Kouemaha (2 games, 1 goal), main striker Alhassane Keita (14 games, 5 goals), key attacking midfielder Hernan Losada (15 games, 1 goal) and also key attacking midfielder Zizo (16 games, 1 goal) are all out of the squad, while main right winger Ayub Timbe Masika (12 games, 1 goal), defender Eric Matoukou (5 games, 1 goal) and defender Ludovic Buysens (4 games) are all out with injuries.


Zulte was troubled till now but tonight its a different story, especially when they are coming from a great result, and that they are facing a decimated team due to absences. Nothing else to add, i think that Zulte will win easy tonight.

Saragossa vs. Betis Sevilla / Segunda Division – This match can be freely called a derby of the round, as two former first league teams will face each other, who on top of it are positioned in the upper part of the table. Zaragoza is seventh, while Betis is better positioned for two places thanks to having one point more. Both teams are in a similar shape, as they drew and lost twice in the last five matches. The difference was that Saragossa lost the last two matches, while Betis won in the last round. The two rivals had played many matches before but this will be their first in the Segunda. Two seasons ago they played the last time in La Liga and that season Betis won both matches, as well as one season before, so Saragossa hadn’t won since 2010 when they won in the Cup. This is the second season in the Segunda for Saragossa, who again has ambition to reach La Liga but are facing problems that are not related to the game itself. There was certain dissatisfaction with the people who run the club and even a shutdown was mentioned but everything was smoothened. However, during that period they lost two matches in a row after one very good series of seven matches in which they hadn’t lost. They in fact won five times in this period, but eliminatioin from the Cup in the second round.

What causes concern is poor defence that received even six goals in the last two rounds when they were defeated by Sporting and Tenerife. They can be proud to have great scorer Borja Baston who has already scored nine goals this season.  Right back Fernandez cannot play this match because of the red card in the last round, and there will be no stopper Vallejo and midfielder Dorce.

Betis is currently in the rhythm one win – one loss. The last match was a victory at home against Barcelona B, but they are certainly still sorry about the match from two rounds ago when they had a lead of 2-0 in the away match against Osasuna which they lost by 3-2. Perhaps it is still not clear to them how they lost that match, but it can be a good lesson for the continuation of the season. Otherwise, Betis play in the second division since this season and it is clear that the ambition is to return to La Lige, while in the Cup this team have already secured a place in the fourth round.

They expectedly play better at home, where they were defeated only once and where hardly receive goals. However, the defence concede two goals on average when they play away, which is certainly worrying. Forward Ruben Castro is expectedly the best player of this team, who has already scored ten goals this season, one per match in all three last matches. Midfielder Reyes is back in the team who was suspended due to yellow cards but midfielders Vadillo is still out of action due to injury.
